Heracléa Caccabaria

Cavalaire takes its name from the Greek colony of Heraclea Caccabaria, which was located in the bay It brings to mind Carthage and the cult of Hercules. The history of this young commune began 800 years before Christ with the Ligures who settled in their oppidum (fortress inhabited from the 6th to the 4th century BC) in Montjean.

The Count of Provence, William I, built a watchtower on the Cap Cavalaire, to which the Counts of Grimaud added fortifications which were destroyed in 1646.

In the 18th century, Cavalaire became a small fishing hamlet that belonged to the village of Gassin until 1929 On 15 August 1944, the Allies chose this spot for the landing of the 3rd American Infantry Division.
